Bargain Malaysia breaks

As Malaysia Airlines tries to win back business, many cut-price holidays are on offer. Between 19 January and 11 February 2015 Flight Centre (0333 333 2211; flightcentre.co.uk) is offering a week in Penang at the Red Rock Hotel, room-only, including return flights from Heathrow via Kuala Lumpur for £645pp (based on two travelling). Book before 15 October.

Egyptian sun escape

Egypt is also seeking to lure travellers back with low prices. Flying from Gatwick on 14 October, Red Sea Holidays (redseaholidays.co.uk) has a 10-night all-inclusive stay at the Sharm Resort Hotel in El Pasha Bay, for £415pp based on two sharing. The price includes 20kg of luggage and resort transfers.

Free ski pass – at a price

The Chedi Andermatt (chediandermatt.com) in Switzerland's Urseren Valley is offering an Early Bird Free Ski Winter Package. Book a stay before 14 November, travel any time up to the end of the season (26 April), and you will receive a free ski pass for the duration of your trip (limit of two passes per room/suite). However, it will cost you a minimum of £2,688 to claim your "free" pass for a week: doubles at this five-star Alpine retreat start at CHF590 (£384) per night.

Even though Virgin Atlantic's Little Red domestic operation is to close, flights from Heathrow to Aberdeen and Edinburgh remain on sale until next September. London-Edinburgh fares are typically £105 return, with Aberdeen at £115 (virgin-atlantic.com).
