You can fly from Birmingham or Edinburgh to a dozen destinations in Europe for under £100 return - but to get this deal you must book before 1 November. That is when Britain's newest airline, Duo, takes off from its bases in the West Midlands and Scotland. Between now and Friday, you can get excellent fares on a wide range of new routes.
Test bookings made from Edinburgh to Geneva, Zurich and Milan, for travel in November, revealed fares of £98 return to each destination. The same fare applies to routes from Birmingham, including flights to Helsinki, Oslo and Cologne - which will be featured in 48 Hours in The Independent on Saturday.
Passengers get free meals, drinks and newspapers. Seats are sold on a one-way basis, so there is no penalty for short stays nor for "open-jaw" arrangements such as flying out from Birmingham to Geneva, but back from Zurich.
All these fares are for bookings made through www.duo.com; telephone bookings on 0871 700 0700 cost £10 extra for a return flight.
A BOAT
On 2 November, low season begins on the 18-hour link between Rosyth in Fife and Zeebrugge in Belgium on Superfast Ferries (0870 234 0870, www.superfast.com). For a two-day stay in Belgium you pay £123 return, including a bed in a four-berth cabin.
A TRAIN
British travellers can now buy tickets in advance for Spain's new high-speed line between Madrid and Barcelona. Trainseurope (0900 195 0101) offers a one-way, second-class fare between the two cities for €91 (£65). Calls cost 60p per minute, but this is refunded if you make a booking.
