LAST CALL FOR CALAIS

The ferry operator that often has the lowest fares across the Channel is SeaFrance (0870 460 3683, www.seafrance.com). The company has an aggressive promotion that ends today. It is selling space even on its peak Friday and Saturday Dover-Calais departures in August for £184 return, for a car and up to nine passengers. Much cheaper deals are available off-peak, and for durations of five days or less; a car plus nine travelling for three days in February pays £62 return. Of the three ferries on the route, the Rodin is the fastest and most comfortable.

INDULGENCE UK

If you can get away in one of the next three weekends, the Malmaison chain of boutique hotels has a rate of £89 per night for two people including breakfast at its properties in Birmingham (0121 246 5000), Edinburgh (0131 468 5000), Glasgow (0141 572 1000), Leeds (0113 398 1000), Manchester (0161 278 1000) and Newcastle (0191 245 5000) - but not the new London Malmaison. The offer ends on 31 January.

Call the hotel direct or book online at www.malmaison.com.

ARMCHAIR ADVICE

Where would your perfect holiday be: Norway? Croatia? Fortunately for Fiona Teal of Blackpool, some of the less exotic suggestions for her trip of a lifetime were overruled, and she ended up in Los Angeles and Las Vegas in the excellent company of Russell Amerasekera, host of Perfect Holiday (BBC1, 7pm tonight). If you prefer the idea of Blackpool - Lancashire's own Las Vegas - fly there from London Stansted for as little as £25 return on a promotion from Ryanair (0871 246 0000, www.ryanair.com).
