A TRAIN

On-the-day upgrades are common on UK trains, at least at weekends. Now you can upgrade to First Class on Eurostar for a flat fare on any day of the week. Train managers sell upgrades from Standard Class for £60 each way; or, if you are travelling on an inclusive city-break, take your ticket to the desk at Waterloo International and pay £99 to make a return trip in luxury. These are "subject to availability", but there is almost always room. Eurostar: 08705 186 186, www.eurostar.com.

A BOAT

Thirty days from today, the pretty way to Mallorca re-opens for the summer: the car ferry from Sete in southern France to Palma. There are three overnight sailings each week. Book through Viamare Travel in London (08704 10 60 40, www.viamare.com). In March, a return sailing for a car and two adults is £447 with an outside cabin (for the people, not the car).

A PLANE

Los Rodeos airport in the north of Tenerife was the site of the world's most catastrophic air accident. On 27 March 1977, two Boeing 747s collided on the runway with the loss of 583 lives. Twenty-six years on, UK charter flights are returning to the airport, making access to the more attractive end of the island much easier. Britannia Airways (0800 000 747, www.BritanniaDirect.com) begins flying from Gatwick on Valentine's Day. Flights in March cost £145 return.
