Whether you want to hang out with celebs in the latest New York joint or relax under an African sky, there's a newly opened bar somewhere in the world for you.

The list of imaginative cocktails at the Boulot, 15 Blair Street, Wellington (00 64 4 801 6615; boulot.co.nz) includes The Smoker, made from Pisco (South American brandy), pear liqueur and the scarlet Italian liqueur Alchermes.

Or treat yourself to a rare bottle of vintage fizz in the champagne bar at Carbon, Old Quebec Street, London (020-7479 5050; carbonbar.co.uk), with its two-storey wall of wine.

Down Under, Collins Quarter, 86a Collins St, Melbourne (00 61 39 650 8500; collinsquarter.com) is the latest opening from hip bar owner Vernon Chalker and includes a courtyard with a retractable roof.

Peter, the rooftop bar at The Peninsula Tokyo, 1-8-1 Yurakucho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, (00 81 3 6270 2888; tokyo.peninsula.com) has uninterrupted city views – from 24 floors up. Enjoy a cocktail to the sound of R&B spun by a DJ.

With backers including Sting and the film mogul Harvey Weinstein, the Havana-themed Socialista, 500 West Street, New York (001 212 929 4303; socialista.us), is Manhattan's next big celebrity hang out.

At Star Bar, Azure Retreats, Benguerra Island, Mozambique (00 27 11 258 0180; azura-retreats.com) you can hang out at the star-shaped bar with a glass of Loire Valley wine from the owner's vineyard.
