Now that the sun seems to have disappeared, it’s enough to make you want to book a quick getaway in February. Get cosy in a cottage or a ski chalet, or go long haul for some proper sunshine.

Austria

Before the half-term holidays send prices shooting upwards, steal away to Austria and enjoy some top-class skiing in St Anton. Scotland

Hole up in the Scottish Highlands for a Valentine’s treat when you book East Craigdhu Cow Byre with Sykes Cottages. Surrounded by the tranquillity of the Highlands, this converted one-bedroom outbuilding has views of the River Beauly and Strathglass, as well as a log burner and large deck. Italy

Cinque Terre is one of Italy’s hotspots, particularly for hikers, but it’s easy to enjoy its beauty in May before the season really gets going. Greece

Enjoy warm sunny days in the small Dodecanese island of Tilos, which turned its back on mass tourism and has gone for the environmentally friendly approach. Go for long walks along its quiet beaches and on scenic mountain trails, looking out for the Byzantine monastery along the way. Mauritius

For true relaxation, it’s hard to resist the lure of the long white beaches that cover the east coast of Mauritius.
