1. Fresh Polish

What is claimed to be "Poland's best hotel" has opened in the awkwardly named city of Lodz. The Andel's Hotel Lodz occupies an 1878 textile mill. It has 277 rooms, with standard doubles at an advance-purchase rate of €108 including breakfast. vi-hotels.com/en/andels-lodz

2. Uganda link

Fastjet, the low-cost airline based in Dar es Salaam, this week starts flying from its Tanzanian hub to Uganda's main airport, Entebbe, on the shores of Lake Victoria and close to the capital, Kampala. One-way fares for the 666-mile trip are typically US$178 (£111). fastjet.com

3. Irresponsible?

Kate Humble and Ben Fogle are the star turns at a Royal Geographical Society celebration in London on 1 October, to launch Bradt's new book of travel tales, The Irresponsible Traveller, and mark the 40th anniversary of Bradt Travel Guides. 4. Capital gain

Tourists to the capital no longer need an Oyster card. Having already been accepted on buses since 2012, contactless debit or credit cards can now also be used on Transport for London trams and Tubes, and on rail services in Greater London. 5. Miami to Vegas

The Las Vegas Delano has opened, bringing the signature South Beach brand to The Strip and promising "understated luxury". Smoking is banned throughout the hotel, which is gambling-free. It also provides dog-friendly suites and a "Doggie Butler". delanolasvegas.com

6. Art cubed

"Scapegoating Pictures for London", a "visceral and epic depiction of modern urban existence" by Gilbert & George, is on show in the capital until 28 September. The exhibition is at the White Cube gallery in Bermondsey Street, close to The Shard. whitecube.com

7. BA back to KL

Troubled Malaysia Airlines faces renewed competition on its flagship route between Heathrow and Kuala Lumpur from 27 May next year, when British Airways reinstates daily non-stop services to the Malaysian capital after a 13-year gap. The lead-in fare of £707 looks widely available through next summer. BA will use a Boeing 777; Malaysia uses A380s. ba.com

8. Family reprieve

South Africa has delayed by eight months the implementation of tough new immigration rules for young travellers. The requirement for families to take birth certificates for under-18s, with other supporting evidence if both parents are not travelling, has been postponed from 1 October to 1 June next year. bit.ly/RulesSA
