WeLoveDates.com has compiled a list of the top twenty-five romantic cities in the world and there are a few surprises in store.

The worldwide online dating site selected the most romantic destinations based on cities with a rich romantic history, the most breathtaking views and romantic walks - and those with the highest marriage rates. The list features insider tips from locals and tourists as well as a love fact about each city.

Audrey Hepburn once said ‘Paris is always a good idea’ and indeed Paris, the backdrop of countless romcoms, topped the list with romantic spots at every turn from stealing a kiss under the Eiffel Tower to a hand-in-hand stroll along the Seine.

Sydney, Australia followed closely in second place, renowned for its world-class wineries, gorgeous beaches and endless possibility of couple-based activities. Unsurprisingly in third position was the timelessly romantic Venice, where George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin will marry this weekend, and Kyoto in Japan came fourth owing to its quaint teahouses, elaborate gardens and tranquility.
