A man has been killed while walking on the M20 in Kent, police have said.

The pedestrian was hit by a vehicle just after 6:45am on Wednesday between junction 8 for Leeds Castle and junction 9 for Ashford, according to Kent Online.

Ambulance crews were called to the scene, near Hollingbourne, with one person pronounced dead.

No other casualties have been reported.

Drivers faced long delays following the accident. The eastbound carriageway was closed between junctions eight and nine and reopened at 2pm.

Even after being reopened motorists still experienced delays of up to 80 minutes.

One lane of the London-bound carriageway was also closed to aid the investigation but is now open.

This morning, the M20 coastbound has been closed again at Junction 8 near Maidstone due to a collision between a car and a van at 4:45am.

The van is believed to have left the carriageway and gone down an embankment, Kent Online reports.

London-bound traffic may experience delays to allow an air ambulance to land.

Cars are being diverted onto the A20. Traffic for Dover may exit at Junction 7 and use the A249 and M2 instead.
