Albanian alert

A skeleton service has been re-introduced, and details are shown in the new timetable, which goes on sale on 27 April. europeanrailtimetable.eu

Grande tour

A new Mexican domestic air link, beginning this week, provides some interesting possibilities for British travellers. The well-regarded no-frills airline, Volaris, is flying between Cancun and Reynosa - a border city located where Mexico meets the southernmost point in Texas. It allows travellers to combine the Mayan Riviera with the Rio Grande area, and enables “open-jaw” itineraries on British Airways, flying out from Gatwick to Cancun and back from Houston to Heathrow. One-way fares of £28 for the 80-minute flight across the Gulf of Mexico are widely available. volaris.com

Tropics transfer

From sea-view apartments in St Lucia to high-end villas in Antigua, James Villa Holidays has introduced a range of Caribbean properties – all with pools – to its self-catering portfolio. With options in Jamaica, St Lucia, Barbados and Antigua, the Abta- and Atol-bonded holidays include flights from the UK, with the option to book airport parking and car hire. For example, the three-bedroom Villa Reveille in Jamaica’s Montego Bay shares the facilities of the Tyrall Club (bars, restaurants, pool, fitness, laundry, spa, golf, kids’ club) and costs £3,908 per week in July, August and September. jamesvillas.co.uk

Feather your nest

Feather Down Farms launches its first location in Ireland this summer. The family-friendly luxury camp site, Loop Head, is on the peninsula of the same name in Co Clare, and will specialise in yoga and saunas, as well as hosting special events. Accommodation is in wooden-floored tents that sleep up to six and come with their own shower room. Opens 1 July; four-night midweek stays from £495. featherdown.co.uk

Time of cholera

The National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNac) has reported a significant increase in the number of cases of cholera on the Tanzanian islands of Zanzibar and Pemba. The infection is spread via contaminated food – particularly undercooked seafood – and water. Travellers are advised to drink bottled and boiled water and to avoid salads, uncooked fruit and vegetables, unpasteurised dairy products and raw/undercooked meat and seafood. travelhealthpro.org.uk

Trunk call

Heads of state, conservationists and scientists will meet for the inaugural Giants Club Summit in Kenya to discuss protection for Africa’s elephants later this week. The charity that helped found the Giants Club, Space for Giants, is also partially behind a new camp in Kenya’s Loisaba Conservancy, opening on 1 May. Loisaba Luxury Tented Camp will open in one of Kenya’s oldest and most important corridors, helping to protect this critical landscape for over 700 elephants as well as providing a luxurious and stunning setting of just six tents for guests.
