The location
In a cottage in a wood, a little old man at the window stood ... Oh how this little gem on the edge of a clearing calls to mind that silly old Brownie ditty. We're in Norfolk, near King's Lynn, on the Houghton Hall estate. The main house was built in 1720 by Sir Robert Walpole and is the seat of the seventh Marquess of Cholmondeley. Bunker's Hill, a mile or so down the road and into the fields, is a more modest affair that once provided shelter for the gamekeeper. A cosy one-storey cottage made of the local dark Carr stone, with cream brick quoins, it stands in its own garden on the edge of an 18th-century wood.
The USP
Splendid isolation. Your neighbours are shy deer and hares racing for cover.
The comfort factor
Two bedrooms, two lounges (both with open fires), two bathrooms and a kitchen, all comfortably furnished, make it perfect for two couples or a family of four. There's a TV and video, but this is a place for parlour games.
The bathroom
Two bathrooms give a touch of luxury. Towels provided but bring your own toiletries.
The food and drink
Stores at nearby East Rudham and a supermarket at King's Lynn. For eating out, try the Rose & Crown at Harpley (01485 520577) or the Hoste Arms in Burnham Market (01382 738777).
The people
Beware of passing ramblers - pull the bathroom curtains when doing your ablutions.
The area
Take a walk on the vast beach at Holkham. Explore the quaint seaside towns of the north Norfolk coast. Visit the big house (free entrance for Bunker's Hill guests).

There is one step inside. Children and pets welcome.
