Where is it?

In uptown, upmarket Chicago, on a quiet street one block west of the Magnificent Mile and in easy walking distance of beautiful Lake Michigan.

What's it like?

Tall. There are 32 storeys, but here in the city of skyscrapers that's not what makes it remarkable. It's the chic, darkly sexy modern décor that sets it apart.

What's its USP?

Architectural credentials. Jean-Paul Viguier, commissioned by the Sofitel group, has created a blazing white square-based structure which narrows to a thin prism at its peak. Surprisingly, in a city that boasts a magnificent edifice on every corner, it stands out.

Service?

Polished yet friendly. Most Chicagoans, you'll find, are equally warm. Special requests are taken care of promptly.

Rooms?

There are 415 rooms, including 32 deluxe suites and one presidential suite. Every room has a view of the city skyline or Lake Michigan from its vast picture windows. Opt for a lake view. The bedrooms are not spacious, but tastefully decorated and comfortable. Bathrooms are large and luxurious, with tub and walk-in marble shower stall. Roger & Gallet toiletries, plus candles and potted orchids, enhance the splendour.

Food?

You can take breakfast, lunch and dinner in the Café des Architectes, which manages to combine the hotel's minimal style with a pleasant level of comfort – you won't be squirming around on a spindly chair as you order breakfast from a menu designed for both American and Continental tastes. Eggs benedict, bacon, French toast and maple syrup or fresh fruit and croissants come in generous portions. For dinner, the menu offers modern European dishes, beautifully prepared with classic ingredients (lamb, guinea fowl, scallops), and an excellent wine list. Annoyingly, most Americans order only by the glass, so asking for a bottle can make you feel like a bit of a lush.

Clientele?

Sharp-suited American fat cats (this is a city for big business) and Europeans who appreciate good design.

Things to do?

Shop for designer labels along the Magnificent Mile, and admire the world-class architecture, museums and galleries. Inside the hotel there's a fitness centre, a quite tasteful gift shop and a stylish, vibrant bar.

Address?
