Destination of the week: Canada's Inside Passage

The day service on the most beautiful ferry route in the world is to begin on 21 May. On alternate days, the Northern Adventure will depart from Port Hardy on Vancouver Island at 7.30am, arriving at Prince Rupert on the mainland of British Columbia at 10.30pm. The new vessel replaces the Queen of the North, which sank on the route a year ago with the loss of two lives. The one-way trip costs C$132 (£60); it offers a cut-price alternative to luxury cruises through the hulks of granite that line the Inside Passage. Book through BC Ferries (001 250 386 3431; www.bcferries.com).

Warning of the week: hazards on UK beaches

The National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth (above) says the dangers from biting and stinging creatures on the UK's beaches could increase this summer as a result of climate change. In particular, the weaver fish is moving further north because of the warm weather. This is believed to be the only marine creature that has caused the death of a bather in British waters. Usually, though, it inflicts a painful sting, best treated with hot water. In addition, "anything with spines or sharp shells should be treated with caution".
