Today: The traditional Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh culminate this evening with a street party. Topping the bill this year are the Vaccines and Mark Ronson (edinburghshogmanay.org).

Meanwhile, in Madrid, revellers will gather in Puerta del Sol square to take part in "Las Uvas" – the tradition of eating 12 grapes, one for each chime of the clock at midnight (spain.info). In New York, Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber will take to the stage in Times Square (timessquarenyc.org).

This week: In southern California, the Palm Springs International Film Festival gets under way on Thursday. The annual event features 200 films from 60 countries, with George Clooney and Gary Oldman among those expected before the curtain falls on 16 January (psfilmfest.org).

In the diary: Croatia's Garden Festival puts in a guest appearance at the Malasimbo Festival in the Philippines between 2-4 March, with a programme of arts and music taking place in an amphitheatre overlooking the tropical paradise of Puerto Galera Bay, on the island of Mindoro (malasimbofestival.com).
