Today: As the days grow ever shorter, make the most of the night in Paris, which is hosting the annual Nuit Blanche. Celebrating contemporary art from 7pm to dawn, there will be events and exhibitions all over the city, from squares to churches – even the Notre Dame ( paris.fr ).

This week: Book a flight to New York, via Reykjavik, on Iceland Express. The carrier is launching flights to Newark next June, with connections from Gatwick, Stansted, and from next summer, Birmingham. Bookings are expected to be available early this week ( icelandexpress.com). Meanwhile, BA is cutting its free baggage allowance in World Traveller cabins to one bag on most of its long-haul routes; other restrictions on sporting equipment also apply ( ba.com). And on Thursday, a new viewing platform is opening at Uluru, Australia, with walkways and shaded areas ( tiny.cc/YpL2z).

In the diary: The Festival of Lights in Berlin will see the city's landmarks, from the Brandenburg Gate to the Television Tower, illuminated for two weeks from 14-25 October. Other events will include performances, fireworks and midnight weddings ( festival-of-lights.de).
