Today: The Rosewood Hotel Georgia in Vancouver, first opened in 1927, flings open its doors once more after an overhaul. The historic hotel, right, has in its time hosted Elvis, The Beatles and miscellaneous royals; it re-opens with a contemporary look, a spa and nightclub ( rosewoodhotelgeorgia.com). Closer to home, the Isle of WIght Walking Festival begins today, making the most of 500 miles of public rights of way (to 22 May; isleofwightwalkingfestival.co.uk).

This week: Museums at Night celebrates culture around the UK into the early hours, and kicks off on Friday. The two-night, three-day event features late opening and events at venues such as the Old Operating Theatre and Kensington Palace in London, as well as an Art Bus in Birmingham and the Helicopter Museum in Weston-Super-Mare ( museumsatnight.org.uk). Also in London, The Lanesborough hotel opens The Lanesborough Suite. Guests who can afford the £14,000 a night price can enjoy its four bedrooms, butler service and chauffeur-drive Rolls Royce Phantom ( lanesborough.com).

In the diary: The National Skiathon begins on 17 May. The charity event challenges teams of skiers to tackle 666 runs in six hours. Proceeds go to Disability Snowsport UK. The event is held at the SNO!zones in Glasgow, West Yorkshire and Buckinghamshire, as well as the Chill Factore in Manchester, the Hemel Hempstead Snow Centre and Tamworth Snowdome ( disabilitysnowsport.org.uk).
