It's back! The UK's biggest travel photo competition is once more on the lookout for entries. Last year's photographs inspired, moved and surprised our team of judges. Wanderlust editor-in-chief Lyn Hughes, is hoping for the same again. "It will be a tough job to match last year," she says. "But here's hoping we are pleasantly surprised." The winning entries will be printed in these pages and Wanderlust magazine.

Amateur category: Western Australia has become one of travel's most exciting draws. From its endless white beaches separating the rugged red interior from the deep blue ocean, Australia's largest state is a nature-lover's dream. Its capital, Perth, is a vibrant city full of culture. All this is why Wanderlust has teamed up with Tourism Western Australia to whisk four winners off on an extraordinary photographic commission. Photos entered into the amateur section can be taken anywhere in the world, but must be a travel image and fit one of the four categories: people, wildlife, landscape or travel icons.

Winner: Landscape category - Penguins in the South Shetlands (Baily Head, Deception Island, Antarctica) by Fred Barrington

Win £3,000

Portfolio category: create a series of shots that tell a story – of a vibrant festival, a wildlife phenomenon, a culture undergoing change, perhaps. The portfolio competition is open to both amateur and professional photographers, who should enter five shots that tell a story about the world we travel in and must fit into one category: people, wildlife, landscape or travel icons. The prize is £3,000.

Winner: Wildlife category - Red-footed falcon (Hortobagy, Hungary) by John Webster
