Next week sees the start of the Ecotourism and Sustainable Tourism conference in Portland, Oregon, with public and trade attendees expected to attend talks and exhibitions on green travel. Keynote speakers include Gap Adventures founder Bruce Poon Tip and Freedom to Roam chairman Rick Ridgeway.

The Ecotourism and Sustainable Tourism Conference (ESTC) is the largest such gathering in North America and one of the best places to observe the latest trends coming out of the green tourism industry. Representatives from both small hotels to international chains will be in attendance to discuss everything from green buildings to ethical food. There is also a public exhibition on September 9.

PSP Southampton International Boat Show

Southampton, UK

Over 121,000 visitors came to PSP Southampton last year, making it the largest outdoor event of its kind in the UK. Although the show is a precursor to the winter London International Boat Show, Southampton focuses strongly on "lifestyle" boating for the general public, with 1000 boats on show and models available for sale from £389 (€467).

Grand Pavois de la Rochelle

Like PSP Southampton, Grand Pavois is another in-water fair and the precursor to the Nautic Paris indoor show in December. Over 700 boats are displayed from 870 exhibitors, as well as a themed "Guest of Honor" exhibit, this year showcasing Tahiti, which will be displaying the best of its culture.

The Genoa Boat Show rivals Dusseldorf in size and importance, welcoming 280,000 visitors, 2,400 boats and 1,450 companies in 2009. Expected highlights include Techtrade, an exhibit dedicated to components and accessories for leisure boating and the presentation of the Italiana Cup for International Match Race regatta crews under 18.

Edition Waikiki Opens

Edition is a new brand from legendary hoteliers Bill Marriott and Ian Schrager and is set to open its first property in Hawaii in October. The luxury boutique brand plans a further opening in Istanbul later this year, followed by properties in Mexico City, Barcelona and Bangkok.

The Savoy Hotel Reopens

Queen Elizabeth Maiden Voyage

The maiden voyage of Cunard's latest 2,092 passenger ship sold out in 29 minutes, according to reports, suggesting that the appetite of travelers for grandeur at sea hasn't passed with the decommissioning of the QE2. Queen Elizabeth features a huge shopping arcade, a spa and artwork by the renowned artist David Linley.
