Q I read your article about the overnight train to Scotland. Can you tell me whether one takes the train from London through to Inverness, or is it necessary to travel first to Fort William and then change to the Highland Railway?

A The Caledonian Sleeper that serves the north of Scotland departs from London Euston at 9.15pm - and offers a multiplicity of destinations. It starts out as the longest train in the UK, but splits at Edinburgh in the early hours into three shorter trains. One serves Fort William, another Aberdeen and the element that you would like, Inverness - where it arrives at a handy 8.36am, in time for a full day in and beyond the capital of the Highlands.
