DR J R Baker, of Cambridge, agrees with my suggestion that black insulating tape can be used to mask the car headlights for continental travel ('if you know where to put it'). 'But in my experience the transparent beam converters available from the AA and RAC are much better. They work like contact lenses, deflecting the dipped beam to the correct side without any loss of light.'
