WILD FRANCE (Sheldrake/Aurum, pounds 9.95), edited by Douglas Botting, is the latest in a series that includes Wild Britain and Wild Spain, designed for those 'who want to get off the beaten track and discover the spirit and essential flavour of a country'.

The handsomely illustrated books offer useful information for nature lovers, with a guide to plants and animals and where they can be found.

Travellers to south-western France should look at 100 Walks in the French Pyrenees (Hodder & Stoughton, pounds 10.99) by Terry Marsh. This lists a good variety of walks, which it says are well within the capability of a regular weekend walker in Britain. Routes range from high mountain walks to riverside rambles.
