Savolinna, Finland

This annual opera festival will be hitting the high notes in the stunning surroundings of the courtyard of Olavinlinna castle, which is perched on a small island in the town of Savolinna. The 500-year-old fort has an eccentric history - captured by the Russians, utilised as the town jail, and housing what are thought to be the first WCs in Finland. This year, the festival features guest performances from our own homeless Royal Opera company.

Epping, UK

Train-spotters go off the rails and turn to double-deckers instead at this Bus Rally at North Weald Airfield, today. This unjustly low-profile event, organised by the North London Transport Society, is a celebration of the greener and more sociable way to ride the roads. More than 200 buses and coaches, and their screaming fans, will be attending this annual gathering.

British Virgin Islands

Sun-, sea- and surf-worshippers head for the beaches of the Virgin Islands this week. Amateur surf and sailing competitors gather on their boats and boards, racing from one island to another in the Bacardi Hiho watersports festival.

28 June - 5 August

Barbados

The end of June marks the end of the sugar-cane harvest and the beginning of the month-long Crop Over festival in Barbados (any excuse!). Events begin with a thanksgiving for this year's crop, and grow more wild with parades, fairs, a fiercely contested Calypso competition, and climax in early August in the Grand Kadooment when islanders dress up and dance in a huge carnival parade.

Crowborough, UK

Don your deerstalker and go to Crowborough where supersleuths will be gathering for this year's Sherlock Holmes Festival. Events include the Baskervilles Super Dog pet show, a mystery trail, and a Victorian street market.
