SCOTLAND

LAPLAND

28 Feb - 2 Mar. Lycksele Market Fair. This fair, dating back to the 17th century, is packed with market stallholders and street traders from all over Sweden who gather, not least to celebrate the return of daylight. Lycksele is in Lapland, in the freezing north of the country.

BALI

1 Mar. Kuningan. The second most important day of the Hindu Balinese calender (after Galungan) with offerings and religious services observed throughout the Indonesian island of Bali (right). One of the most important customs is ritual bathing in holy springs.

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

1 Mar. Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade(right). This annual parade may come a fortnight late but it is one of the biggest and most colourful of its kind in the world. At least half a million local people will be lining the streets to watch the fun.

1-2 Mar. For those who enjoy skiing as a spectator sport, Lillehammer, Norway, hosts the latest round in this year's downhill World Cup.

TAHOE CITY, CALIFORNIA

1-9 Mar. The largest winter carnival in the west of America takes place at Tahoe City, California, with downhill and cross-country skiing, skating, street dancing, polar bear swimming "and other zany contests".

CAPE BRETON ISLAND, CANADA

2-7 Mar. Cheticamp on Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island celebrates the ancient Arcadian tradition, brought over from France, of Mi-Careme, a burst of mid-Lenten revelries involving disguises and fancy costumes, designed to alleviate the hardships of fasting.
