Porthcurnick Beach on southern Cornwall’s lush Roseland Peninsula is home to the immensely popular Hidden Hut – a tiny café with big ambitions. It's open every day during the summer season and serves fabulous lunchtime specials – think seafood chowder or tasty curries – as well as the sorts of things you would expect a Cornish beach café to have. There are homemade pasties and sausage rolls, great, over-stuffed sandwiches, salads and soups (a speciality on spring and autumn Sundays) and mouthwatering homemade cakes and local ice creams.

Nothing is deep-fried, everything is locally sourced and homemade. But it's the "feast night" – two or three a month, from March to September – that really draw the crowds. The formula is simple. Everyone eats the same thing (barbecued local lamb or locally caught crabs, for example) and you bring your own booze. It’s fun, relaxed, and perfect for the whole family. Even better, it all happens just a short stroll away from the wonderful Rosevine hotel, which is one of our favourites in these parts (but that’s another story!).

So, get planning. The next Hidden Hut event tomorrow, with smoked and spit-roasted Gerrans Bay mackerel taking centre stage, has already sold out. Tickets for August events go on sale on the first day of the month, so keep a close eye on their website for details. And the beach? It’s one of the best for miles around, a beautiful south-facing sandy crescent, dog-friendly and with parking. What are you waiting for?
