At 45 miles long, the Norfolk Coast Path is one of the UK’s more manageable long-distance footpaths, weaving its way along the coast from one old-fashioned seaside resort to another – Hunstanton in the west to Cromer in the east.

As you would expect, it’s flat and easy walking for the most part, with the path threading its way along sand dunes, marshes and low cliffs. As a National Trail, it’s also well-marked and signed. Not that many people do the whole thing, and if you wanted to pick a spot to join the trail, we’d recommend Brancaster Staithe at the bottom of the garden of the White Horse, from where you can head west for Titchwell and Holme or east for the Burnhams, Holkham Bay and Wells-next-the-Sea. The White Horse is one of the Norfolk Coast’s best pubs, too, renowned for its oysters, mussels and other seafood, which you can enjoy in a big glass conservatory that overlooks the marshes.

Plus you’re just a few hundred yards from the pop-up shops and cafés of the year-round Dalegate Market, which is a particularly good place to be this week because they’re staging a timely performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in their wonderful open-air theatre – 1920s style.
