July 24

The 34th World Santa Claus and Christmas Elves Congress will be taking place, with a summertime Christmas parade in the streets and the election of Santa of the Year 1997.

Wales

July 20-26

Aberystwyth plays host to the Ian Rush (right) International Soccer Tournament. Up there with Ascot and Henley as one of the sporting events of the summer, arrive early to avoid missing the Rush.

England

July 24 - August 4

The Headworx Cherry Coke Surf Festival returns to Newquay. This is the UK's only international pro surfing tournament, and biggest free beach party. The festival also includes the Voodoo Dolls Ladies Pro Surf, and the Pure Juice UK Surf Open.

Spain

July 25

Santiago de Compostela. This traditional religious festival brings head honchos from government and church to the Santiago cathedral to give speeches to the nation, whilst a huge six-manned censor is swung from the ceiling. Fireworks and general festivities follow in celebration of the famous pilgrimage of St. James.

California

July 25-27

The annual Garlic Festival held in Gilroy, sees a celebration of this strong-smelling, pungent-tasting little bulb, with all manner of dishes being prepared in its honour. Festival is detectable within a five state radius.
