Labour MP Rosena Allin-Khan discusses Brexit issues with Tooting constituents

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Local people and local businesses are worried about Brexit but a no-deal Brexit is unfathomable to them, due to the irreparable damage it will do.

With Boris Johnson as prime minister, the threat of a no-deal Brexit is more real than ever before. Along with other MPs, I have been inundated with residents’ concerns over what this will mean for their livelihoods, their families, and the hostile environment they have been forced to live in, by a government that is willing to drive us off a cliff edge.

I stood up for the UK under Theresa May and I will not hesitate to do so again under Boris Johnson.

Around Tooting, I regularly speak to people about Brexit their concerns around it are wide-ranging, covering a host of issues. Many of them are captured in this video.

They are worried about their EU friends, they are worried about climate change protections, they want to know the cost of imports and exports. These are people telling me that they are a Londoner, they are proudly-British and proudly-European. I fit all of these categories too.

I think a public vote on any Brexit outcome must be mandatory and in any referendum or election, I will be campaigning to Remain. Every day, I see the benefits that the EU brings to Tooting, to businesses, big and small, and to families and friends I would not want to lose that. We must not lose that. Any attempt to force through a no-deal Brexit must be met with an equal measure of objection and rejection.

I will continue to stand with people from Tooting and across the country who seek to protect our identity, and protect the benefits that the EU continues to provide us.
