Leading article: Gesture politics

Politicians should set an example. But gestures can be no substitute for policy. For too long our leaders have been citing their green credentials but doing little to back them up. Where are the advocates of statutory annual reductions in carbon emissions? Where are the champions of a tax on airline fuel? Why does the Prime Minister not step in to prevent the closure of ecology laboratories? Policies are what matters. The rest is just more hot air.
