Even in the kind of fantasy world where you can get hold of love potions without going to too much trouble, wizards and witches enter into marriages that turn sour. This, apparently, is the fate of Ron and Hermione. JK Rowling has said that they would probably need relationship counselling. The chemistry isn't right. It should have been Harry who ended up with Hermione, says the Harry Potter author.

Speaking to Emma Watson, who played Hermione in the film adaptations, JK Rowling said: "[Ron and Hermione's match] was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility. Am I breaking people's hearts by saying this? I hope not."

Watson agreed: "I think there are fans out there who know that too and who wonder whether Ron would have really been able to make her happy".

Could the bumbling ginger wizard hold the attention of one of Hogwart's finest minds over the decades; would physical attraction hold them together; or was it a mistake from the start?
