SO NEAL Ascherson ('An open democracy should still have its secrets', 28 June) believes it is wrong to worry about freemasonry because 'the end product of this sort of ganging-up is not some ominous secret power seizure, but spreading mediocrity and incompetence'.
Well, if it's only 'spreading mediocrity and incompetence' we have to worry about then that's all right, isn't it?
