Letter: Briefly
NICK HORNBY asserts that 'all art should comfort and cheer' ('Just how dangerous can a dead cow be?', 5 June); might I suggest that art shares with religion the adage that its purpose is 'to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable'. Where would the likes of Heartfield, Grosz and Hogarth fit in to Hornby's scheme of things?
Thomas Hardy, London SW12
