Sir: I note from your article 'Donations to Tories dry up leaving party in the red' (1 October) that the Conservative Party is approximately pounds 19m in deficit. Might I suggest that they reduce this deficit by levying VAT on members' subscriptions.
I realise that this may not be a popular move, but it could be phased in over, say, two years, and relief could be given to elderly, less well off members.
