Sir: I have recently returned from a school trip to Sicily where I visited the Roman villa of Casale at Piazza Armerina, and saw mosaics of bikini- clad girls that date from the 4th century AD. This clearly predates "The first bikini, Paris, 1946" ("The week that was", 2 June) by some 1,500 years!
