Letter: It doesn't pay for councils to borrow

Sir: Your report about 31 councils transferring their housing stock to local housing associations said they were all Conservative-controlled ('Councils set to sell off millions of properties', 1 August).

This is not so, as my own District of Hart, Hampshire, has been hung for some years; the largest party group is now Liberal Democrat. It was once Alliance-led.

A transfer of housing stock was only agreed after the last general election to release funds held by government controls, and allow the housing associations to build more houses which we and others were not allowed to do by the Tory government for many years.

Yours sincerely,

D. W. CLEATON
