Sir: Hazel Wachters-Patmore's letter is not logical (20 October). In order to prove that the institution of monarchy contravenes human rights, she lists a number of things the monarch can only do if he or she is prepared to abdicate. The Archbishop of Canterbury is free to declare himself a Seventh Day Adventist and the editor of the Guardian is free to declare himself a Conservative, but both would have to resign their positions if they did.

Yours faithfully, P. G. SUAREZ London, SW10 21 October
