Sir: I was interested in the article about China written by James Fenton ('Sir David, the Chief Useful Idiot to China', 5 April). In the early Fifties, I was chairman of the Coningsby Club and, on one occasion, I played host to the late Field Marshal Montgomery.

During dinner, he told me that Mao Tse-tung was the greatest man he had ever met.

Yours faithfully,

HUMPHRY BERKELEY
