Sir: In the light of recent revelations about David Mellor's extra- curricular affairs, am I the only reader who feels it slightly sinister that the tabloid press can target the government minister responsible for their privacy regulation, publish offensive tittle-tattle about his private life, then complain that he is unsuitable for the job as a result of their behaviour?

Yours in defence of a quiet life,

GORDON H. MUIR
