Sir: Apart from Israel, whose origin in revelation must put it hors concours, none of the examples of countries named after persons, which Stephen Gould gave in his letter (19 September), has the antiquity of Gibraltar's naming after Tarik ibn Zeyad as Jebel Tarik, or Tarik's mountain.
