Sir: I do not profess to know why the No 19 bus is painted yellow and maroon, with 'Kentish' written on its side. I would, however, like to point out to Nell Dunn (Letter, 5 July) that 'Kentish' does not necessarily refer to Kent.
Kentish Town is so named because of the Ken Ditch, which runs through it on its way (mainly underground these days) from the ponds near Ken Wood to the Fleet, which joins the Thames.
Yours faithfully,
AVIS POWELL
