NO DOUBT Bill Alexander and his comrades honestly believed they were fighting an anti-Fascist war. Had they won, however, Spain would have become a Communist state and a Russian satellite, run by a stooge of Stalin's. Not only did Franco save his country from Communism, he also did the West an equally vital service by keeping Spain out of the Second World War and not closing the straits of Gibraltar, which would have turned the war in favour of Hitler.
