Sir: I wonder why Will Bennett chose to mock the memorial service for Viscountess Rothermere (report, 2 October). Many of us who attended it were genuinely shocked by her premature death, and we will miss her erratic and engaging personality.

Lord Rothermere's public farewell to his wife was among the most moving speeches I have ever witnessed, and I am only sorry that Mr Bennett should have so completely missed the point of it all.
