Sir: Lord Broadbridge's letter (16 June) about the 'oarsmen' and 'rowers' debate reminds me that when I was up at Oxford in the Fifties, rowing chaps were frequently referred to as, simply, 'oars'. I suppose the subsequent expanded participation in the sport by women has put an end to that, at any rate.
