Sir: In reply to Jim Mangles (Letters, 15 May), it is true that the addition of mandated territories increased the size of the British Empire after the First World War by about a million square miles. But even then, at 13,347,187, it was still only about a quarter of the total land surface area of the globe, not the two-thirds claimed by Niall Meehan (Letters, 10 May).
Yours faithfully,
G. CHOWDHARAY-BEST
