Letter: Strategic encore
Sir: Dr Meyrich Emrys-Roberts is right to criticise early applause at concerts (letter, 27 July). Much worse, however, in my view, is when members of the audience leave before the curtain calls are taken. This is not only inconvenient for those who wish to display their appreciation, but it is also
extremely discourteous to the performers.
Sadly, at the Proms yesterday evening, even the promenaders were leaving before the end of curtain calls. Those who did leave early yesterday missed a marvellous encore from the Gabrieli Consort. Perhaps this is the way to restrain those who seem to care so little about showing their appreciation.
Yours faithfully,
PETER SITCH
