YOU ARE quite right to describe John Logie Baird's television development as a 'technological cul-de-sac', yet this denies the wee country the credit it deserves for the work of another of its sons. In 1908 and, in more detail, in 1911, Alan Archibald Campbell Swinton (1863-1930), born in Edinburgh, published his ideas about 'distant electric vision', a scheme for making and displaying pictures using cathode-ray tubes; in other words, television.
