IF ONLY Nick Gilbert ('Carlton chief donated to Tory Party funds', Business, 7 February) were right that a major television licence might be secured by a private donation of pounds 15,000 to Tory Party funds made five months after the licence had been awarded] As reported in the Independent on 17 October 1991, Carlton's successful application was accompanied by a cash bid of pounds 43m a year. If the figures and dates had been the other way round, Mr Gilbert might have had a story.
