Sir: Your leader on free access to the nation's galleries and museums strikes the right note.

I well remember accompanying a group of students on an exchange visit to the Soviet Union, when they claimed with patriotic pride that British galleries and museums were open to the public without charge. They were not believed, but they were right. But that was in 1959-60.
