Taking the lottery far too seriously

From The Rev Ronald Trounson

Sir: Though I share the view of the Rev Roger Reed (letter, 13 April) that there is much about the National Lottery to be regretted, I believe that the scale of its success is an indication of something that we could well find reason to be grateful for.

We may not approve of the way in which our fellow men and women choose to spend their money but the choice is theirs to make. The fact that so many people today clearly have so much money to spend, and are often very much better off than their parents and grandparents were, is an indication that times are not so very hard after all and something to rejoice about.

Yours faithfully,

RONALD TROUNSON
