UK weather forecast: Parts of Britain to be warmer than Mediterranean over Easter weekend

Temperatures could soar to 22-23C in London and South East

Britain will be hotter than the Mediterranean during the Easter weekend as the country is set to bask in temperatures over 20C.

As holidaymakers jet off in search of sunshine in the coming weeks, they could be leaving the best of the weather behind.

Parts of the UK are expected to be hotter than St Tropez in the south of France, Corfu, Bodrum in southern Turkey, Marbella, in Spain, and the island of Majorca during Easter.

London and the South East could see temperatures soar to the hottest in the country at 22-23C – warmer than the 20C forecast for Marbella over the weekend.

Cardiff could hit 21C on Saturday, the same across areas in Northern Ireland, as Glasgow and Aberdeen will be about 20C. The UK average for this time of year is 11.5C.

Met Office forecaster Simon Partridge said Good Friday will be pleasant before the mercury rises to exceed 20C in areas on Saturday and Sunday.

But clouds could bring some cooler temperatures in the North West and some parts of the east coast on Easter Sunday, the cooler of the two days.

Mr Partridge said: “After there was a chilly spell this weekend, we are going to see temperatures gradually increase through the week.

“By the weekend we could see in parts of the country temperatures of around 20C, or just above.”

For the rest of April, forecasters are predicting the weather will be changeable and windy at times with showers or longer spells of rain but still with some drier and brighter spells.

Temperatures for the rest of the month are expected to be mostly around average.

The highest temperature ever recorded for an Easter weekend is 27.8C which occurred in two different years.

The first was in Heathrow, west London, and Mildenhall, Suffolk, in 1949 and the second was recorded in Wisley, Surrey, in 2011.
