US rapper Snoop Dogg has made friends with a Welsh farmer and swede champion Ian Neale

Music: What's in a name? Snoop Dogg finds out

This week Snoop Dogg announced he's to change his moniker to Snoop Lion in line with his new reggae album 'Reincarnation'. Pop is littered with acts changing their names – whether to symbolise a change in direction or (as when Prince became a symbol and then Prince "1958–1993") to annoy their record company.

Ice-T, Chuck D, Melle Mel & Raekwon, Hammersmith Apollo, London

As they say in the US, "game recognises game" - and hip-hoppers rarely hesitate to bestow honour upon its pioneers for teaching those next in line a thing or two - especially those who are doing it so well. So there's moments tonight when, despite being age-mates, Public Enemy's venerable Chuck D pays tribute to the legendary Melle Mel, calling him "teacher" ("You snatched the pedal out of my hand son!" Mel shouts back, beaming). Later, the PE frontman nods like a proud dad as he watches fellow New Yorker Raekwon take his turn on the mike - and when the latter introduces "the man of the hour, my brother, your brother" Ice-T, you can't help notice the smallest gesture of respect.

Time for Hip-Hop to take over the rock hall of fame, say rap pioneers Public Enemy

Militant rap group whose atonal soundtracks and black power politics shocked listeners should be considered for inclusion says the band’s leader Chuck D

Wu Legends, ABC, Glasgow

The Wu-Tang Clan should establish a group motto: perhaps something like "it’s no show without a no-show." Those who turn out for the highly-regarded Staten Island hip-hop outfit have grown used to the fact that the full advertised line-up won’t be what they actually get, but so extensive are the Clan’s solo careers that they’ll inevitably be consoled by the presence of at least two or three of the genre’s most established names.

Adam Yauch, the gravelly voiced Beastie Boys rapper and the most conscientious member of the seminal hip-hop group, has died, his mentor Russell Simmons said tonight. He was 47.

Leslie Feist, Apollo, Manchester

Their music may be the vile splurge of a disturbed brain, but in the wreckage of a chaotic show, there are signs of hip-hop greatness

Album: De La Soul's Plug1 & Plug2, Present First Serve ([PIAS])

There's plenty to enjoy about this first release in ages from the De La Soul camp, concerning the rise and fall of a wannabe rap duo from Queens.

Bankrupt rapper Young Buck told to sell his name

He still wears diamond earrings, a gold medallion and the chunkiest of diamond-encrusted watches, but the hip-hop artist Young Buck could be about to lose one of his most valuable possessions: his name.

Album: Dubbledge, Dubbledge Vs. The Boondocks (Dubbledge)

On his latest album, rapper Dubbledge uses fragments of the cartoon series The Boondocks - which satirises African-American cultural and lifestyle pretentions - as skits linking his own, more serious tracks: the Flavor Flav to his Chuck D, as it were.

Album: Common, The Dreamer/The Believer (Warner Bros)

Three years on from Universal Mind Control, Common reverts back from that album's Neptunes-produced techno grooves to a more old-school hip-hop style, courtesy of his long-time friend (and Kanye West's mentor) No ID, with whom he last worked on 1997's One Day It'll All Make Sense.

Jay-Z has started work on his next album.

Album: Beastie Boys, Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 (Capital)

The eighth studio album from the Beastie Boys comes after a long lay-off made even longer by Adam "MCA" Yauch's treatment for cancer.
